The robot failed on a Tuesday. Forty-eight hours before regionals, our drivetrain seized in the middle of a practice run, and six months of after-school work rolled to a stop with it.

I remember the silence more than the panic. Then Priya reached for the spare motor bin, and I started a list on the whiteboard of everything we could still control. We rebuilt the gearbox twice that night. The second rebuild held.

People talk about leadership like it is a megaphone. Mine turned out to be a checklist, a bin of spare motors, and the decision to stay calm eleven minutes longer than I felt.

Specificityraises the weakest dimension

Strong instinct, vague execution. Name the list: what were the first three items? One concrete line here does more than the whole next paragraph.

We rebuilt the gearbox twice that night. The second rebuild held. People talk about leadership like it is a megaphone. Mine turned out to be a checklist, a bin of spare motors, and the decision to stay calm eleven minutes longer than I felt.

Next step

Rewrite the whiteboard sentence with the first three items on that list. Rescore after. Expect Specificity to clear 75.

Add Rice to your list and start its supplement before OCT 01. It reuses your Common App draft.

Walk in ready.

Your interviewer knows your profile. Practice the questions your schools actually ask.

SESSION 2 · QUESTION 3 OF 8

Question 3 · Why Rice

Rice caps undergraduate research slots. If you do not land one your first year, what do you actually do?

Why they ask this: Rice wants students who have a plan B inside the school, not just a love letter to the brand.

Ask about your applications, your schools, or the work in front of you.

Is my list too reach-heavy? Be honest.

No. Two reaches, four targets, two safeties is balanced for a 3.82 and a 1430.

Your real risk is the timeline, not the list. Rice ED resolves by DEC 15. If it is a no, your UT Austin materials need to be finished BEFORE that answer arrives, not after. That is why the scheduler has UT essays due OCT 15.

Series convergence tests

AUG 22, 2026 · FROM YOUR UNIT 10 LECTURE NOTES

Every convergence question is really one question: do the terms shrink fast enough? The tests below are ordered the way you should reach for them on the exam, from fastest check to last resort.

Key terms

  • nth-term testIf terms do not approach zero, the series diverges. Always check this first.
  • Geometric seriesConverges when the ratio's absolute value is under 1. Sum = a / (1 - r).
  • p-seriesSum of 1/n^p converges only when p is greater than 1.
  • Ratio testTake the limit of consecutive term ratios. Under 1 converges, over 1 diverges, exactly 1 tells you nothing.

Likely exam questions

  1. 01Determine whether the sum of n / (n^2 + 1) converges. Name the test you used and show the comparison.
  2. 02A series has ratio limit exactly 1. Explain why the ratio test fails and choose the test you would use instead.
QUIZ ME · AP CALC BC · SERIES QUESTION 4 OF 10

Question 4 · You missed this topic last time

The series sums 3^n / n! from n = 1 to infinity. Converge or diverge?

The ladder, step by step

  • 01Set up the relationshipThe wall, ground, and ladder form a right triangle: x squared plus y squared equals 169. The 13 never changes, so differentiate both sides with respect to time.
  • 02Differentiate and substitute2x dx/dt + 2y dy/dt = 0. When y = 5, x = 12. You know dy/dt = -2 (the top slides DOWN, so it is negative).
  • 03Solve for the base's speed24 dx/dt + 10(-2) = 0, so dx/dt = 20/24 = 5/6 ft/s. The base moves away at about 0.83 ft/s.

Check yourself

The sign trap: dy/dt is negative because the top moves down. If your answer came out negative, that is where it went wrong.
